5 Benefits of Indoor Plants

It's common knowledge that during photosynthesis, plants breathe in carbon dioxide and  give off oxygen as a waste product. By adding some plants inside your home you are not just adding greenery, you are adding powerful living organisms which does not just affect the air you breathe.  Plants have the power to affect your mind and home in a way that can enhance your quality of life.

Here are 5 benefits of indoor plants that you may not know

Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa)

1) Increase Creativity

The Attention Restoration Theory suggests that looking at nature (even pictures) can shift the brain into a different processing mode making it easier for you to concentrate.  This then can lead to you having a greater sense of creativity.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum spp.)

2) Reduce Noise Levels

Plants are often planted along the side of roads to reduce noise caused by busy roads.   Plants are able to absorb, diffract or reflect background noise.  By having indoor plants you can reduce the background noise inside your home too.

Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina)

3) Impact Your Mood

Green is considered by colour psychologists as one of the most calming shades there is. Having plants indoors can increase our levels of positivity and make us feel more secure and relaxed.  There are also benefits with loneliness and depression. Looking after a living thing like a plant can gives us a purpose and is rewarding.  Part of the beauty of plants is waiting for them to burst into bloom.

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

4) Improve Sleep

When you think of getting a restful night's sleep, adding indoor plants to the bedroom isn’t usually what comes to mind. But by adding a couple of selected indoor plants like lavender (Lavandula) and jasmine (Jasminum) you can aim for a more restful sleep.  The vapour from these plants can induce a state of tranquility which will help you prepare for a good night sleep.

Mother in Law's Tongue (Sansevieria)

5) Clean The Air

Plants act as natural air filters to catch allergens and other airborne particles.  Research has found that rooms with plants have less dust and mould than rooms which don’t have plants. It's not only the plants' leaves that can help the air.  Plants also use their roots to remove toxins.  Plant roots can absorb harmful toxins and convert them into nutrients for growth.

Which Indoor plant is right for you

There are a few things to consider when selecting an indoor plant.  You need to get one which is suitable for the conditions of your home.  Will the plant get enough light. Does it like a hot/cold temperature? How big will it grow, will it be on the bench top or on the floor.  You may need to do a little research in order to find the right indoor plants for you home.
